Recipe: Anchovy Twists

Dainty little strips of anchovy in cheese pastry twists; great for your buffet party


  • 8 oz. (225g) plain flour
  • 4 oz. (125g) margarine
  • 3 oz. (75g) cheddar cheese, grated
  • 2 oz. (50g) can anchovies
  • pepper
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • Cooking Instructions:

    1. Pre-heat oven to 425F, Gas Mark 7, 210C
    2. Drain the anchovies and cut each in half lengthways
    3. Place the flour in a bowl and add a good shake of pepper
    4. Rub in the margarine and add the cheese
    5. Mix to a stiff dough with egg and a little cold water
    6. Roll out pastry on a floured board to one eighth of an inch thick
    7. Place the anchovy strips on the pastry and cut around them, so that there is an anchovy strip on a narrow piece of pastry
    8. Pick each up, twist about twice, so that the anchovy is twisted together with the pastry
    9. Place on a baking sheet and bake in the center of the pre-heated oven for 10-15 minutes, until lightly browned and crisp
    10. Remove and cool on a wire rack
